What is the ECO4 Scheme?
The Energy Company Obligation (ECO4) is a government energy efficiency scheme in Great Britain. It is designed to tackle fuel poverty and help reduce carbon emissions. Under ECO4, medium and larger energy suppliers fund the installation of energy efficiency measures in British households.
Who is Eligible?
Eligibility is primarily based on receiving certain means-tested benefits. These include:
- Income Based Jobseekers Allowance (JSA)
- Income Related Employment and Support Allowance (ESA)
- Income Support (IS)
- Pension Credit Guarantee Credit
- Working Tax Credit (WTC)
- Child Tax Credit (CTC)
- Universal Credit (UC)
- Housing Benefit
- Pension Credit Savings Credit
Even if you don't receive these benefits, you might still qualify under the 'ECO4 Flex' rules through your Local Authority, which assesses households based on low income and property energy efficiency (EPC rating of D, E, F, or G).
What Improvements Are Covered?
ECO4 takes a 'whole house' approach. This means the property will be assessed, and multiple measures may be installed to ensure the property is upgraded to a minimum standard. Measures often include:
- Loft Insulation
- Cavity Wall Insulation
- Solid Wall Insulation (Internal or External)
- Air Source Heat Pumps
- Boiler Upgrades (in limited circumstances)
- Solar Panels
