The "Free Solar Panels" Myth
If you've spent any time on social media, you've likely seen ads promising "Free Solar Panels" for UK homeowners. While these ads are often misleading lead-generation tactics, there are legitimate ways to get fully funded solar panels—but strict criteria apply.
The Legitimate Route: ECO4
The only widespread, legitimate way to get fully funded (free) solar panels in the UK is through the government's Energy Company Obligation (ECO4) scheme. However, solar is rarely installed on its own under ECO4.
To qualify for solar panels under ECO4:
- You must receive qualifying means-tested benefits (or qualify via LA Flex).
- Your home must have a low EPC rating (usually E, F, or G).
- Solar is typically only approved if it's combined with a new heating system (like an air source heat pump) or if the property is off the gas grid.
Rent-a-Roof Schemes (Mostly Defunct)
In the past, "Rent-a-Roof" schemes offered free solar panels in exchange for the installer keeping the Feed-in Tariff (FiT) payments. Since the FiT ended in 2019, these schemes have largely disappeared for residential properties (though they exist for commercial properties via PPAs).
0% VAT and Green Mortgages
If you don't qualify for ECO4, you can still reduce costs. The UK government has currently set VAT on solar panels to 0%. Additionally, many banks now offer "Green Mortgages" or specialized low-interest home improvement loans to help spread the cost of solar installations.
Beware of Scams
