The UK government offers several schemes to help homeowners improve energy efficiency and lower bills. The two most prominent are the Energy Company Obligation (ECO4) and the Great British Insulation Scheme (GBIS). But how do they differ?

ECO4: The 'Whole House' Approach

ECO4 is designed for low-income and vulnerable households. It takes a comprehensive approach to upgrading a property.

• Eligibility: Strictly means-tested (e.g., Universal Credit, Pension Credit) or via Local Authority Flex.
• Scope: Multiple measures can be installed at once (e.g., solid wall insulation, solar panels, and a heat pump).
• Goal: To raise the property's EPC rating by several bands.

GBIS: The 'Single Measure' Approach

Previously known as ECO+, the Great British Insulation Scheme has broader eligibility criteria but a narrower scope of work.

• Eligibility: Open to a wider range of households, including those in lower Council Tax bands (A-D in England, A-E in Scotland/Wales) with an EPC of D or below.
• Scope: Funds a single major insulation measure, usually cavity wall or loft insulation.

Which One Should You Apply For?

If you receive qualifying benefits and your home is highly inefficient, ECO4 offers the most comprehensive support.
